Product quality, integrity and purity are all the more important as their applications affect health and well-being. This raises the question of quality control and the means of ensuring it. In this respect, natural products may require more than just analytical techniques, although this is far from being the case.
Essential oils are often all the more precious for their high market demand, but they can be fraudulently adulterated, either by dilution or by the addition of compounds, synthetic or natural, to enhance the quality of the oil. Techniques exist to reveal the exact nature of an oil and its compounds. But they require relatively delicate expertise and are not always infallible. This raises the question of what is the best practice to devote oneself to. Is it better to develop ever finer and more exhaustive analytical techniques, or to develop upstream links of trust with suppliers, so as not to eliminate but to limit the role of these controls? The answer probably lies somewhere between the two positions.
